The Erasmus+ KA1 project “Youthful Taste: EU Youth Against the Waste”, organized by MAD for Europe, was a youth exchange that took place from 10 to 15 November 2024, and proved to be a great success both for the participants and at local and European levels. A total of 40 young people, accompanied by 8 group leaders from different European Union countries, took part in the exchange. Among the participants were young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, which made it possible to offer opportunities to those who would normally have less access to international experiences — thus promoting inclusion and social equity. All the organizations involved actively work with youth, supporting their personal and professional development. The main goal of the project was to raise participants’ awareness of food waste, a topic that remains somewhat taboo in certain EU countries. Through a variety of activities, the young participants learned about the importance of adopting responsible habits and engaging in concrete initiatives to reduce food waste. The project also aimed to strengthen their practical skills, foster a sense of environmental responsibility, and encourage them to apply what they learned in their daily lives. The project pursued several key objectives — all in line with the Erasmus+ priorities — which were successfully achieved: - Promote awareness of food waste and sustainability, helping young people understand the importance of reducing food waste and adopting responsible habits. - Encourage active participation, motivating youth to get involved in concrete initiatives to minimize waste and promote sustainable practices. - Develop practical skills related to sustainability, resource management, and environmental awareness. - Foster environmental responsibility, encouraging conscious action and reflection on the impact of individual choices. - Boost cultural exchange, providing opportunities to discover other perspectives, value diversity, and strengthen cooperation among young Europeans. - Create networks and promote collaboration, encouraging interaction and joint projects among participants. Thanks to all the actions carried out before, during, and after the exchange, the project’s objectives were met with outstanding results. Participants not only gained knowledge about how to reduce food waste, but also enhanced their social and intercultural skills and were able to put their learning into practice. Moreover, the project promoted cooperation among people from different cultures, mutual respect, and provided a safe space to share experiences and reflect on the importance of this topic. The project took place in Madrid, a vibrant city full of cultural life, offering the perfect environment to combine non-formal education activities with sustainability initiatives and moments of social interaction. Thanks to this experience, participants had the opportunity to spread the values of Erasmus+ and raise awareness in their communities about the importance of food sustainability across Europe. It can be proudly stated that the project exceeded all expectations and objectives, leaving a positive and lasting impact.
