Objectives

"Youth and global transformation, participation and volunteering" is the title of one of the action lines of the Youth Strategy 2030, and ensuring that young people can adequately influence all areas of society and all parts of decision-making processes, from priority setting to implementation, is one of the priorities of the partnership between the European Commission and the Member States. Although their participation is crucial for democracy, young people are under-represented in the decision-making processes that affect them. They need access to physical spaces in their communities to support their personal, cultural and political development. Youth must be an agent of change and progress, driving significant transformations in transcendental areas such as human and labour rights, full equality, a new sustainable productive model, or the construction of democratic, inclusive and plural societies. In order to achieve these goals, youth associations and the direct and active participation of young people must be promoted through online and offline participation tools. Already the European Charter on Youth Participation in Local and Regional Life (Strasbourg. 2003) stated that "The active participation of young people in decisions and activities carried out at local and regional level is essential for the consolidation of democratic, inclusive and prosperous societies". Participation and active citizenship means having the right, the means, the space, the opportunity and, where necessary, the support to participate in and influence decisions, and to take part in actions and activities aimed at building a better society. However, the perception of many young people is that we live in a society that is progressively tending more and more towards individualism and indifference, in which each individual is only concerned with his or her own needs. The HYPER (How Youth Participate in European Realities) project aims to foster youth participation by promoting a broader understanding of the notion of participation, enabling knowledge of different forms of participation in local communities and discovering how new (or alternative) forms of civic engagement support social movements and broaden the definition of participation. It also seeks to increase community engagement and enhance youth leadership. The project will promote the exchange of ideas, as well as the social awareness of the young participants through a model of healthy leisure, activities of respect for the environment, teamwork, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, cultural and social knowledge of the local community, emphasising the value of social participation as a transforming element of our environments. As objectives related to youth work, we highlight the approach to the European reality, the knowledge of different cultures and realities, intercultural learning, the promotion of participation in youth associations, contact with the Erasmus+ Programme and other institutional initiatives in youth policies, education in respect, tolerance and cultural democracy.
