Objectives

The current youth context presents an alarming lack of critical analysis, environmental responsibility and trust in institutions. However, active citizenship represents a fundamental pillar in the education of young people, contributing to the development of responsible, conscious and committed individuals. At the European Community level, this is recognized as a key objective of EU policies. In fact, it is also underlined by the European Union Youth Strategy 2019-2027, which promotes the active participation of young people, encouraging them to become conscious citizens. In Spain, the importance of active citizenship is also recognized by Royal Decree 157/2022, which establishes the organization and guidelines for the minimum teaching of Primary Education, closely linked to the values of the European Union. However, many young people today face difficulties arising from economic uncertainties, environmental problems, inequalities and discriminations, as well as challenges related to mental health and rapid technological, social and cultural changes. This can undermine the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence of young people to be at the center of policy decisions in the territory. To address these challenges and give a voice to young people under the age of 30, we have created the Youth Exchange project. Through this project, we aim to rebuild the skills and confidence of young people, fostering values such as respect, listening and active participation in the community. We will address topics such as civic education and environmental responsibility, without neglecting a fundamental aspect for the success of young people: interpersonal relationship skills. Through interactive activities, workshops and discussions, we will strive for participants to meet the following objectives: > Develop their critical spirit; > Become aware of and involved in the challenges related to political and economic decisions; > Gain the necessary tools to participate more actively in territorial policies; > Improve their interpersonal skills; > Develop a more inclusive and responsible perspective on environmental issues. The project also seeks to be a ray of hope for those segments of the population under 30 who are at high risk of marginalization, based on (potential) factors such as: ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, beliefs or political opinion. Participants will, in fact, learn to understand the challenges that political and economic decisions can bring to the population in terms of social inclusion. This aims to enable participants to take what they have learned even to more disadvantaged environments with which they may come into contact, as well as to adopt a realistic and inclusive perspective should they occupy relevant roles in the European political and economic landscape in the future. Finally, the theme of active citizenship in our KA1 youth exchange project is not only in line with Spanish law and EU ambitions, but also with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to which the European Union adheres. In short, by involving young people in the project, our aim is to offer them the opportunity to participate more actively in society, raising awareness about active citizenship and sustainability.
