Objectives

At the end of our first Erasmus Plus Project together, and the first Erasmus Plus Project ever written and implemented from A to Z, we feel grateful. Looking back at how it all started, we realize that we were fortunate to participate in the E+ training course ”Make it happen” in Cyprus 2023 and get the challenge to create our own project. Moreover, looking back at how we personally benefited from other Erasmus mobilities, we felt motivated to pay it forward and organize a project so other young people can benefit as well. Therefore, our first objective was to work together to create a safe environment for learning, based on non-formal methods of education, inclusion, equality and collaboration, where young people are given a voice. We also wanted to help the participants experience the intercultural dimension of E+ and the feeling of belonging to the European context while receiving the responsibility to disseminate their learning in their communities and become active citizens. This also reflects the objective of Youth Exchanges, that of creating intercultural dialogue and learning and cooperation between european countries and beyond and the promotion of non-formal methods of communication. Nonetheless, consulting the 11 Youth Goals of the Erasmus Plus programme we decided to guide our steps based on the principles of quality learning, valuing mental health and wellbeing, social cohesion and sustainable growth in society. Secondly, we wanted to come up with a relevant topic. The idea to focus our Youth Exchange on “conflict management” came as a result of both our common interest in the topic and the need we identified among young people in our countries when it comes to managing emotions, conflict management and communication. One one hand, as youth workers, we understood that conflict is needed in order to explore different opinions and, as a result, find innovative and creative solutions for our organizations. At the same time, we value communication, discussions about boundaries and being in contact with our emotions while experiencing conflictual situations. On the other hand, the results of the survey we conducted prior to writing the application for our project indicated that there were 13 emotions that the respondents rate as hard to express, 53.6 % of the respondents pointed to their need of better understanding emotions in order to be better at solving conflicts, followed by 32.1% who think assertive communication is the skill they need while 28.6% mentioned non-violent communication methods. Nonetheless, 43% of the participants in our survey said they were not sure (a score of 3 out of 5) with their satisfaction about the way they solve conflicts at present. Based on these two streams of information, we aimed to create a context where young people from 6 countries can develop and exercise their conflict management skills. More specifically, we had four objectives for our project: (1) we wanted the participants to learn how to use at least 3 tools to name, recognise and express their emotions and the emotions of others, (2) we wanted them to get to know how to use at least 4 methods of assertive communication and non-violent communication and learn to use at least 2 of them in order to manage aggression in their environment, (3) we aimed that by the end of the project they will know at least 3 different conflict management tools and strategies to react to conflicts, and (4) we wanted to also reach their attitude towards conflict and support them in becoming more confident in the way they approach conflicts and express their emotions. We also predicted that through our project and especially through the dissemination activities, we will impact the communities (friends, families, colleagues, co-workers) of the participants, the environments reported as the ones where conflict arises most commonly, thus creating a sustainable effect. At the same time, we aimed to create a positive change in the partner organizations. On one hand, we understood that writing and implementing an Erasmus Plus project is a collaborative and learning process that can enhance the abilities and vision of the partner organizations who get involved. At the same time, since more of the partner organizations were just launching we wanted to increase their visibility and branding and create trust for their future collaborations. Nonetheless, we thought that the topic and tools we develop and practice during our Youth Exchange will also help the involved organizations to manage conflicts better.
