Objectives

In recent years, the need to address young people's mental health has become increasingly evident. Especially after the Coronavirus pandemic, the mental health problems that young people were experiencing and that were accentuated by the pandemic were exposed. According to the 2022 “Health at a Glance” report, almost one in two young Europeans reported having unmet mental health needs, and the proportion of young people reporting symptoms of depression in several EU countries more than doubled during the pandemic. In 2023, the European Commission adopted the Communication on a global approach to mental health to address this challenge from a comprehensive and preventive perspective. “Grow as you write” is a project that reflects these needs and supports culture and art as tools to prevent mental health problems and promote the care and emotional well-being of young people. Currently, access to therapeutic and mental health care services is limited according to different socioeconomic variables (social class, place of residence, membership in vulnerable groups...). Furthermore, structural reforms in the mental health system are necessary to effectively address the mental health challenge in the majority of EU member countries, as stated in the Commission Communication. For all these reasons, the project seeks to introduce young people to a new tool for self-exploration and self-knowledge through writing: autobiographical writing. Through this practice, available to anyone (regardless of their economic situation, gender, race, place of residence and origin, etc.), we intend that young people can investigate their personal stories, express their emotions, share experiences with others and thus review, reflect, question and adopt new perspectives on their past (healing) and towards the future prevention). With this, we seek to cover the need to care for and improve the mental health of youth, offering them a useful resource that they can turn to at any time. We also want to create a safe space where we can share situations of discrimination, violence, etc. that have marked their lives from an emotional point of view, since many times these situations are behind mental health problems. In this way, the objectives we set are the following: -Promote the care and mental well-being of young people from a preventive perspective -Teach a new self-exploration tool available to everyone: autobiographical writing. -Promote autobiographical writing as a therapeutic and healing tool. -Open spaces for dialogue about the mental health of young people and the difficult situations and experiences that they go through in a safe environment of respect among equals. -Use and promote art as a tool for individual and collective transformation.
