"EUROrurals? YES!!" is a training course project designed by young people and rural youth workers from 5 program countries and 1 third-country associated with the program. Its purpose is to positively contribute to the past European Youth Year by offering a theoretical and practical approach to the theme of European rural development through the potentialities of the Erasmus+ program. The project targets a total of 25 rural youth workers from Spain, Slovenia, Cyprus, Poland, Romania, and North Macedonia. Given that rural areas are a key sub-theme within the priority "A New Push for European Democracy" of the European Commission for the period 2019-2024, our project aims to support youth workers from rural areas who may not be aware of the numerous positive changes that the Erasmus+ program can bring to their respective communities. In a way, "The Erasmus+ Program as a Tool for European Rural Development" is connected to the Rural Pact as a framework for cooperation and the European Union's Rural Action Plan. As recommended by the young people and rural youth workers involved in the preparation phase of this project, 5 national-level research studies were conducted to properly understand the problems and needs of rural communities (always from a youth perspective) in each participating country. It was agreed that the main problem was an even more acute lack of youth opportunities in these environments and that the main need was the introduction of an innovative methodology that could make these areas more visible not only at the provincial, regional, or national level but also in European and even international terms: something that the Erasmus+ program can perfectly offer. Some of the results of those research studies include: In terms of lack of opportunities, the existence of such a gap was demonstrated through official statements made by entities such as the Council of the European Union, which on May 26, 2020, announced a series of conclusions for Member States in favor of European rural youth, calling for greater visibility of active citizenship-promoting programs such as Erasmus+ or the European Solidarity Corps. On the other hand, the need to empower or re-empower even more, for example, the youth of Castilla-La Mancha who are frequently forced to leave the region in search of decent present and future employment opportunities and who, compared to their national counterparts, also present lower rates of internationalization. With a SMART (Specific - Measurable - Achievable - Realistic - Time-related) approach in mind, the project objectives are: To attract 25 rural youth workers from 5 EU countries and 1 non-EU country to significant civic, economic, social, cultural, and political participation in Hellín (Spain). To connect people and institutions facing similar issues in order to create new networking opportunities that benefit their work related to youth work for 12 months. To empower 25 rural youth workers from 6 countries, including Spain, Slovenia, Cyprus, Poland, Romania, and North Macedonia, encouraging them to be active members of the Erasmus+ community for the benefit of the rural populations to which they belong.
