What we want to achieve is that partner NGOs will perceive the European Solidarity Corps in the Mediterranean region as a driving force to promote and build peace. We will share and provide the group with tools, ideas, and inspiration to act as a hosting and sending organization with the support of the ESC program while contributing to building peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable societies. Activity will help youth workers and NGO managers to identify, develop, and recognize peace skills found relevant by partners and participants themselves. It takes place in a context where many young people are willing to live in a peaceful society and are, currently, very concerned not only with finding a job or a training opportunity but also with the violent conflicts happening nearby. In this context, NGOs developing ESC activities can investigate the type of skills and attitudes that are relevant to fostering peace and share methods to strengthen them. At the FCV we promote this activity because we believe that youth and voluntary-based NGOs can do more by relying on volunteers with different cultural backgrounds and experiences to create new spaces for mutual understanding and enrichment, intercultural learning, and exchange. The idea behind this is to help voluntary-based NGOs play a more decisive role in helping young people become peace promoters and peacebuilders and understand volunteering as a powerful source to develop specific learning relevant to living in peace. Voluntary-based NGOs might improve their impact by understanding the basic concepts of peace culture and peace education and spending some time analyzing how to implement some of these concepts and tools in the life and practices of each organization, which sounds more challenging than it is. Activity will empower NGO leaders to implement ESC activities to fight against the different elements of the culture of war, including discrimination, violence, and hate speech, and in implementing intercultural learning activities for youth. It will equip partner organizations with practical tools to involve young people in the life of the organizations, manage different types of conflicts, and learn how to communicate non-violently. We expect to create inspiring spaces to reflect on the topics of youth participation, empowerment, and active social inclusion. The PBA’s general objectives are: -To mainstream the concept of ‘Volunteering for peace’, incorporating peace culture and peace education in the ESC and volunteering activities carried out by each partner organization, finding out how partner organizations can work together towards more peaceful societies using the ESC program. -To improve the support given to young volunteers and ESC participants so they can develop peace-related skills and be more active as peacebuilders. -To promote cooperation and networking among youth workers and voluntary-based NGOs active in the field of youth volunteering, and non-formal and intercultural learning to develop new ESC projects for Peace. The PBA’s specific objectives are: -To encourage a real exchange of ideas and perspectives among youth workers (in a broad sense) regarding peace-related topics (in a broad sense) and the role of young people. -To learn about conflict management and non-violent communication, and how to use it in the different ESC projects and activities. -To share tools to identify, develop, and recognize key peace skills and attitudes of young volunteers, including active listening and giving and receiving feedback. -To find out how partner organizations can work together towards more peaceful societies using the ESC program.
