Objectives

One of the reasons we decided to carry out a youth exchange project in the first place was simply to increase internationality among the youth. The idea of a youth exchange came from the idea of giving young people a new experience, an opportunity to travel and get to know another country and also to meet other young people with same interests. These wishes had risen from youngsters in other our activities. From the beginning, it was clear that the target group would be those who wouldn’t otherwise have the possibility to travel abroad and get this kind of international experience. This goal was achieved for the German participants, but the Finnish youngsters were not able to travel abroad, because we received funding only for one of the two planned exchanges. Originally we had applied for funding for two exchanges, one in Germany and one in Finland. The original objectives that emerged from the original theme of the project were the following: 1. Supporting those who may find it more difficult to skateboard or scooter: especially girls and non-binaries 2. Uniting skateboarding and scootering youth 3. Support healthy, responsible and sustainable lifestyle choices that support the hobby 4. Learning from each other and using the knowledge in developing skateboarding and scootering hobbies in our home cities 5. Deepening the international and European aspect of the hobby. At the core of these objectives was a hobby that connects young people, which would help them to learn about each other’s cultures, countries, and lives. This also included increasing understanding of cultural and personal differences and tolerancen - which would reduse discrimination. We saw understanding and accepting differences as an opportunity to learn from each other’s and strengthen the connection between youth cultures in different countries. We believed that learning would be happening besides with personal growth, also with concrete skills. By gaining this learning and experience we hoped to be able to develop skateboarding and scootering in our own cities. At the same time, our aim was to strengthen the feeling of being Europeans and EU citizens, and how being part of these groups affect in our lives, for example through hobbies. We also set the goal of supporting healthy, responsible, and sustainable lifestyles that support young people’s participation in their hobbies. This perspective was aimed to have an impact on young people’s personal well-being and also on the environment. In this project, we especially wanted foster inclusion and to reach young people who have difficulties accessing hobbies such as skateboarding or scootering due to socioeconomic background, gender, or social difficulties. The idea was that these young people would get support and encouragement and by that they would be able to develop their skills and strengthen their self-confidence. We wanted the project to create an environment where no one feels judged but respected and seen as they are. This would also make it possible to overcome prejudices and increase respect and understanding toward others. In organisational point of view, we wanted to develop our competence in international youth work and start implementing Erasmus+, as well as cooperation between our organisations. The German organisation was a newcomer and basically the Finnish one as well, since the organisation hadn’t done any Erasmus+ projects in years. Our cities, Tampere and Chemnitz, have been twin cities for a long time, but before this we hadn’t done any cooperation in youth work.
