The DiscoverEU inclusion action -project is a joint initiative between the youth services of Puumala municipality and three young people from Puumala, a journey to Europe. Together with youth workers, the young people plan an approximately four-week-long trip to Europe. The project period begins on December 1, 2024, and the young people will undertake the journey in spring or summer 2025. Due to geographical reasons, young people from Puumala are youngsters with fewer opportunities. Puumala is a small municipality in South Savo with long distances to cities. The population of the municipality is declining, and the population is aging. In the youth services of Puumala municipality, the focus is not only on providing leisure activities for young people and strengthening their general participation but also on implementing young people's own thoughts and ideas. The basic idea of the activities is to work together with young people, not just for them. The DiscoverEU inclusion action -project offers Puumala youth services a new opportunity to support young people's participation and implement young people's own plans and goals through youth work. The young people participating in this DiscoverEU inclusion action - project have set objectives to include practical aspects related to travel, as well as to explore European cities, the shared European history through past events and architecture, not forgetting food culture. The young people want to reflect historical events in the present, as their fundamental idea is that history cannot be forgotten or denied. By knowing history, a better future is built together. Additionally, the young people want to improve their personal skills for possible further studies, internships, or voluntary work periods in EU countries.
