Objectives

The project aimed to raise awareness about environmental challenges and climate change. Respect for the environment through sustainable and responsible eating by changing consumption habits was at the heart of the project. The main objective was to make students aware of the need to make food choices that have less impact on the environment and to inspire them to engage in action. The objective for teachers was to improve teamwork on the project. The other objectives were: - acceptance of cultural diversity through culinary specialties, - development of digital skills for all participants, - improvement of linguistic, and communication capacities, - strengthening the sense of belonging to the European Community, - understanding the values of inclusion with the participation of people from all backgrounds.

Background

Food production is responsible for about a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, and scientists have found that limiting global warming will be impossible without significant changes in the way we eat. With our project, we studied the effectiveness of 3 food-related options that have a high potential for mitigating climate change and moving towards carbon neutrality: 1. Eating less meat, 2. Buying and/or growing local and seasonal foods, and 3. Stopping food waste. However, engaging students on this topic is sometimes difficult, as they hear a lot of moralizing speeches and often feel powerless at their level. We needed to move beyond theory and make them actors in the fight against global warming in order to motivate them. Moreover, we needed digital tools to carry out our actions. Promoting digital transformation is essential in our time. The development of digital skills for both teachers and students is crucial for engagement in the changing world.
