Environment and climate changePromotion of alternative forms of participationBridging intercultural, intergenerational and social divide

Objectives

There is no planet B! The list of environmental concerns is endless. A growing number of scientific reports warn of the urgent need for action. Climate change and environmental degradation are an existential threat for the entire world. Climate issues are increasingly in the news due to recurring periods of droughts, floodings, energy tensions and so on. Each new generation is, at the same age, more concerned about climate issues than its previous ones. Across Europe, young people are mobilising and getting involved in various forms of environmental activism. This mobilisation, along with the strong green vote among young people in the European elections, makes visible a European youth that is convinced of the reality and seriousness of climate change and is pointing the finger at political inaction. But we also have to recognise that young people's engagement on environmental issues shows socio-demographic disparities. The majority of young people who get involved are from higher social classes, have higher education qualifications, are in stable situations, particularly in their working live, and whose parents are already politicized. Based on this observation, our project idea was born: to bring together young people from Germany, France and Morocco from less privileged family backgroundsHowever, it must also be noted that young people's engagement on environmental issues shows socio-demographic disparities. The majority of young people who are involved are from higher social classes, are in higher education, have stable situations, particularly in terms of their professional lives, and whose parents are already politically active. Based on this observation, our project idea was born: to bring together young people from Germany, France and Morocco from less privileged family backgrounds to enable them to learn in a non-formal and informal way in an international environment. The main objective of the project is to empower and support young people from three countries to become more actively involved in building a sustainable future within civil society at the local and/or regional level, so that they can become actors of change for sustainable development, environmental protection and international cooperation. The project enables young people to get to know each other, develop a deeper understanding of the environmental crisis, its drivers and consequences, learn about the culture and daily life in the three countries, and mobilise young people and strengthen their capacity to become actively involved. In addition to the objectives related to the theme of sustainable development, our project had the following objectives: - Bring together and connect participants from European and non-European countries, particularly Morocco, to encourage the promotion of diversity and commun values; - Create a participatory, intercultural and interlinguistic setting to establish links between young people from the northern and southern Mediterranean; - Deepen knowledge about the three participating countries (culture, history, society, etc.); - Discuss and exchange on the daily live of young people; - Become aware of cultural influences on their own thinking, behaviour and reactions; - Question themselves become aware that certain realities that young people consider normal, vary from country to country; - Introduce participants the ways of engaging as a (European) citizens and encourage them to see themselves as full actors in the present and the future; - Become aware of how to move from motivation to concrete civic engagement and bring out new ideas on how to get involved in environmental issues at the local level; - Improve the social and intercultural skills and the ability of participants to understanding today's society; - Increase the participants' capacity for autonomy and sense of responsibility; - Make mobility possible for all interested young people, including those who face obstacles to mobility (e.g. financial barriers); - Experiment with new communication strategies; - Value all languages and discover and practise foreign languages through language animation activities; - Documenting the exchange using creative tools and then disseminating the results of the week to valorise the work and mobility experience of each participant.
