Objectives

With the UNITED WE STAND project, we wanted to offer young Europeans—especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds—a human, cultural, and educational experience enabling them to understand, accept, and value Europe’s diversity. Our ambition was to go beyond simple statements about “unity in diversity” and create a real experience of intercultural learning, cooperation, and personal expression through digital photography and non-formal education. The main objective was to foster inclusion and European cohesion by giving young people the means to discover other cultures, challenge their stereotypes, and develop an open and tolerant perspective on diversity. The project pursued three specific objectives: O1 – Developing intercultural skills and European awareness Enable 28 young participants from France (Martinique), Italy, Romania, and Serbia to gain a deeper understanding of cultural differences and Europe’s shared values. Through direct contact, teamwork in international groups, and non-formal activities, participants learned to recognize diversity as a strength and to strengthen their sense of European belonging. O2 – Using digital photography as a tool for dialogue and awareness-raising We wanted photography to become a common and accessible language for expressing cultural identities, emotions, and shared experiences during the exchange. Young people used photography to create powerful visual messages capable of raising awareness among a wide audience about tolerance and respect for diversity. This work resulted in the creation of the digital exhibition “UNITED WE STAND”, later presented in the local communities of the four partner countries, reaching more than 900 young people in total. O3 – Promoting the social inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities The project aimed to directly involve 8 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds or cultural minorities by offering them a space for self-expression and personal empowerment through non-formal methods. These participants were supported to fully integrate into the group, build self-confidence, and see diversity as an opportunity for growth and belonging. What we aimed to achieve overall Create a concrete experience of European unity where young people learn to cooperate despite cultural, linguistic, or social differences. Improve participants’ key competences: social and intercultural skills, communication, critical thinking, creativity, and digital skills. Strengthen young people’s active participation in their local communities by turning them into ambassadors of intercultural dialogue. Fight discrimination and prejudice by using photography as a means of reflection, expression, and positive communication. Ensure the project’s sustainability through the dissemination of the exhibitions and the continued involvement of young people within partner organizations. In summary UNITED WE STAND aimed to help shape a generation of young Europeans who are more open-minded, more supportive, and more aware of the richness of European diversity. By combining the emotional power of photography with the participatory approach of non-formal education, the project enabled participants to experience intercultural cooperation, overcome stereotypes, and build lasting bridges between their cultures and communities.
