The ‘repas de l'égalité’ (equality meal) project, conceived by a group of young volunteers supported by the Vir'volt association, aimed to encourage young people to get involved and participate in solidarity, social and environmental initiatives in Essonne and the Île-de-France region. More specifically, the young people set themselves the following objectives: To combat discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. To spend a convivial and joyful moment with other young people, without judgement or dominant attitudes (= creating a ‘safe space’ to exist and discuss issues that are still too often stigmatised or insufficiently addressed in the family or friendship environment). To offer an original and attractive activity (based on popular education) for young people who are isolated from such activities and live in rural areas. Develop the civic, ecological and social awareness of the young people involved. Encourage exchange between social classes, ages, and cultural and religious backgrounds. Welcome new young people into the association's volunteer groups. Encourage the involvement of young people with fewer opportunities in ecological and civic initiatives. The young people proposed a series of ecological cooking workshops, where each group meal welcomed young people from the local area and various social organisations in the Paris region (local mission, MJC, community centre, community café, etc.). These meals were also an opportunity to reflect and discuss issues such as inequality and gender and sexual identity.
