Objectives

The project Research-Action on Youth and Engagement (RAJE) aimed to strengthen young people’s democratic participation by starting from their lived experiences. It was implemented in three territories in Brittany (Rennes Metropolitan Area, Loudéac Community Bretagne Centre, and Lesneven Côte des Légendes), bringing together young people from both rural and urban contexts. The project was based on a shared observation: many young people feel distant from political institutions, even though they are directly affected by public decisions. Traditional participation mechanisms often appear inaccessible or disconnected from their everyday realities. The main objective was therefore to create spaces where young people could collectively analyse their living conditions, better understand the mechanisms of social and territorial inequalities affecting them, and experiment with alternative and more accessible forms of participation. More specifically, the project aimed to: -Enable young people to transform individual experiences (mobility, education pathways, access to services, mental health, territorial inequalities) into structured collective analysis. -Develop their skills in expression, argumentation and cooperation. -Experiment with innovative participatory methods inspired by non-formal education and participatory action research. -Foster direct and well-prepared dialogue between young people and public decision-makers, in a framework designed to reduce power imbalances. -Strengthen young people’s sense of legitimacy in taking part in public debate. The project fully aligned with European priorities related to inclusive democratic participation and the promotion of alternative forms of engagement. It also aimed to reach the political level by creating concrete opportunities for dialogue with elected representatives and institutions. Beyond individual events, the ambition was to build a sustainable inter-territorial dynamic, enabling young people to see themselves as active contributors to social change. By implementing RAJE, we sought to contribute to a more accessible, horizontal and territorially grounded form of democratic participation, empowering young people to analyse, formulate and collectively present their proposals.
