Objectives

The Crossroads project aimed to empower young refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants to better understand the global issues affecting their lives and to strengthen their ability to participate actively in their new communities. Our objective was to create accessible educational tools that help young people explore the links between personal experiences, local challenges, and global crises, using systems thinking and experiential learning. We also sought to build the capacity of youth workers and organisations to work more effectively and inclusively with diverse groups, providing them with practical methods such as community mapping, thematic workshops, and podcast storytelling. Overall, the project aimed to foster intercultural dialogue, amplify young migrants’ voices, and promote a shared sense of European identity grounded in solidarity, inclusion, and collective problem-solving.

Background

The Crossroads project was created to respond to the growing need for inclusive, meaningful opportunities for young refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants to participate actively in their communities. Across Europe, many young people with a migration background face social isolation, limited access to learning opportunities, and few spaces where their experiences and knowledge are valued. At the same time, youth workers and organisations often lack practical tools to address global issues, such as climate change, conflict, or social inequality, in an accessible and engaging way. We applied for this project to bridge these gaps by developing experiential, creative, and community-based methods that empower young people to understand the connections between local challenges and global crises. Crossroads aimed to strengthen intercultural dialogue, promote active citizenship, and support organisations in building more inclusive practices. Through this project, partners sought to amplify young migrants’ voices and equip them with skills to contribute positively to their new communities.
