Objectives

1. Improved understanding of the importance of democracy and human rights for society's prosperity Democracy and human rights form the cornerstone of stable and prosperous societies. In democratic systems, power is derived from the consent of the governed, allowing citizens to influence leadership and policy through free elections and civic participation. This transparency and accountability help prevent abuses of power, foster innovation, and build public trust in institutions. Participants have been able to learn about the importance of these societal characteristics through comparisons with the societal outcomes of countries with countries unstable democracies. Several African nations that have struggled with democratic consolidation, such as Zimbabwe or Sudan, illustrate how the absence of accountable governance can lead to authoritarianism, economic decline, and the violation of basic human rights. When governments suppress dissent and limit freedom of expression, citizens lose faith in public institutions, and conflict becomes more likely. These examples highlight that democracy is not simply about holding elections, but about ensuring that rights and justice are consistently upheld. 2. Improved knowledge and understanding of European history and culture Europe is culturally and historically very diverse continent. By using the positive peace framework to analyze why some societies are better organized than others, the participants were able to better understand their own countries and cultures. Prosperous societies depend on factors like well-functioning government, low levels of corruption, equitable resource distribution, high human capital, and free flow of information. In European countries, differences in economic and social development often reflect variations in these underlying pillars. For instance, Northern and Western Europe consistently score high on measures of government effectiveness, social trust, and equality—creating environments that encourage innovation, foreign investment, and strong social welfare systems.
