Objectives

The objective of this project were: - To support learning about Christmas traditions and their cultural, historical and religious contexts - To facilitate intercultural exchange and understanding among participants by exploring and sharing diverse Christmas traditions in different European countries - To provide a platform for open dialogue and discussion among participants about the significance of Christmas in their cultures and lives - To support promotion of European values by emphasizing the importance of tolerance, diversity, and solidarity in the context of shared cultural celebrations, especially related to Christmas - To raise the awareness about relevance of active participation in society throughout the year by motivating participants to be volunteers and to empower them to support other young people to become volunteers as well Objectives clearly show what we wanted to achieve. Project purposely included these specific 6 countries: having 2 with majority of citizens declaring as Catholic, 2 as Orthodox and 2 as Protestant. All these denominations celebrate Christmas as they have same religious roots, but certain religious interpretations can slightly differ. Each local context, even the family context of each participant, brings unique habits, traditions and ways of celebrating this Holiday. With this project we wanted to bring all those perspectives and diversity together simply to share, learn and raise the awareness. This project idea was triggered a while ago by simple question on why Catholics and Orthodox celebrate Christmas on different dates. This is something that is not only religious question but a matter of general culture so this, and many other similar cultural, historic and political matters surrounding Christmas and its celebration were discussed and participants will know more about them in the future. Every denomination, country and community has different holidays and traditions which precede to Christmas, in order to prepare for this holiday. There are many different meals, songs and ways of doing certain things that surround it which we wanted to be familiar with, know more about them and experience them. We wanted to share and learn how others make Christmas decorations to decorate Christmas tree and their house, what do they eat on Christmas, how do they prepare for Christmas…. Since Christmas is closely related with many different values, through this project we wanted to tackle this topic as well. We identified that Christmas related values such as tolerance, acceptance, solidarity…are very much European values and how that all makes us more Europeans. At the same time, we connected this topic with the topic of volunteering and how through volunteering we can make someone Christmas nicer and better. Following this, we emphasised that volunteering and supporting community, especially those that are in deprivileged situation, should be something we do all year round not only during the holidays. We wanted to share ideas and experiences related to volunteering to inspire each other to be more active after the project. Finally, with this project we wanted to ignite and raise Christmas spirt among the participants and local community. We had many moments where we shared personal stories. One of the participants shared that he actually never liked holidays because his family situation was really bad and that during this project, after many, many years he finally felt Christmas spirit and joy again. During the week we were also interacting a lot with the local community. People were happy to see so many foreign young people just enjoying Christmas in the town, going for ice skating and involving them in their activities. We had people coming to take pictures in our Erasmus+ Christmas Photocorner and bringing us Christmas cookies or they joined us in the workshop of making Christmas decorations. We were all together looking forward to Christmas.
