The main goal of the “Mindful Youth” project was to respond to the growing mental health challenges that many young people face today—challenges that became even more visible after the COVID-19 pandemic. We wanted to create a safe space where participants could talk openly about mental health, learn more about themselves, and develop tools to manage everyday stress and emotions in a healthy way. Through this project, we aimed to help young people become more self-aware, understand how mental health affects their daily lives, and realize that they are not alone in their struggles. By meeting peers from different countries and backgrounds, they had the chance to see that mental health issues exist everywhere, and that sharing experiences across cultures can help reduce stigma and strengthen solidarity. Our objectives were based on real needs we heard directly from young people in a previous exchange. They told us they wanted to: Better understand mental health and their own emotional well-being Learn practical tools for stress management, resilience, and self-care Develop stronger self-knowledge and personal awareness Explore how their culture and environment shape their attitudes towards mental health Gain the confidence to talk about these issues and support their peers Become more open-minded by working in international teams and learning from others Create follow-up actions in their own communities to keep the conversation going We also wanted to strengthen the cooperation between the partner organizations and promote the use of non-formal education methods in youth work. Activities like reflection circles, journaling, role-playing, outdoor challenges, and creative workshops were chosen to help participants learn by doing—not by being lectured. In the long run, we hoped to inspire both the participants and the involved youth workers to take what they learned and use it in their personal lives, schools, NGOs, or future projects. Mental health is not a one-time topic—it’s something that should be part of ongoing conversations in youth work. In summary, our project aimed to empower young people by providing them with tools, confidence, and understanding of mental health, while also promoting cross-cultural learning, community engagement, and self-discovery.
