We created our project, EMPOWERmental for Youth Workers, with the aim to raise awareness on the importance of mental resilience and well-being in youth work. With this retreat training and its accompanying activities, we have set the objective to prepare youth professionals to better serve the needs of their target groups while taking care of their own needs as well. The project offered professional development by improving youth workers’ and other youth professionals’ self-awareness by providing them with artistic, somatic and design-based tools, enhancing their skills and creating a safe and trustful international network of like-minded peers. With this diverse range of contributions to their professional and personal skill sets, we aimed to contribute to ensuring their own mental balance as well, supporting not only the quality, but also the sustainability of youth work. The aim of our project was to contribute to a more resilient, skilful and capable workforce in the youth sector, to support professional caregivers in being aware of the challenges their target group faces in the continuously changing circumstances of the 21st century. The idea emerged from the need of our own partnership’s network for adaptable and easy-to-use tools that can help achieve these aims. Naturally, we have complemented our experiential hypothesis with thorough research in the process of preparing our project, to have found that our impressions are justified by extensive research and strategic documents on the topic (eg. Structured Dialogue Cycle VI Thematic Report: Mental Health and Wellbeing, The State of the World’s Children Report: On My Mind). These reports have found that both young adults and students suffer from being forced to deal with unrealistic life expectations, a sense of failure and stigma associated with mental health. Youth workers and other professional facilitators working with young people are not prepared to the challenges of the increasingly fast changing world, expecting youth to be constantly available, prepared and consistently highly performing students, all the while being well in the middle of a collapsing economy, a humanitarian and climate crisis and a frequently reshaping world order. As youth workers ourselves, our professional experience clearly shows the challenges that our peers and young people face daily, due to the social isolation and remote workstyle of the post-pandemic era and the current economic and humanitarian crises in Europe and beyond. The current reality challenges the mental balance of each of us daily. As professionals working in the area and in regular contact with both youth workers and young people, we strongly believe that our most important task in working with young people is to prepare them to become resilient and able to constantly and instantly adapt to the challenges of their ever-changing environment. And even more so, it is our task to prepare the ones supporting them, the youth workers and other professionals in daily contact with youth, to become resilient and prepared to support them well. We have designed our project to have a double effect (both on youth workers and on their target group, youth), as we believe that the most important work we can do to contribute to a sustainably healthy society is to support those working with young people. Our partnership’s separate practices have already been engaged in this direction, providing a stable professional ground and significant expertise in the area. Furthermore, our previous experience and continuous feedback from our target groups have confirmed that initiatives supporting young professionals working with the notion of mental balance are still rare. With our project, we aimed to address the importance of preventing mental health problems (such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, etc.) and increasing the mental resilience of youth workers and young people in the participating countries and beyond. EMPOWERmental for Youth Workers aimed to destigmatize mental health issues and democratize new tools in the field of youth work for supporting mental well-being and resilience. We have designed an inclusive professional and cultural exchange training and equipping youth professionals with practical skills and concrete tools to support their mental well-being and to educate the ‘resilient youth’ by enhancing their facilitation toolkit developing participants’ self-awareness, as well as that of their sending organisations and their target groups to focus on prevention measures fostering wider visibility and capacity-building in the field of mental health, raising awareness of the above-mentioned issues in the participating countries and beyond connecting like-minded youth workers both locally and internationally to create an inspiring and empowering community of experts.
