This project aimed to empower young people in Ballyfermot to share their visions, hopes, and dreams for the future while actively challenging racism and stereotypes. In Ballyfermot, we are proud to stand with people from diverse backgrounds including refugees who now call our community home. With young participants from countries such as Zimbabwe and Ukraine, this project highlights a powerful message: young people reject racism and are committed to building a more inclusive society. At the heart of the initiative was a focus on creativity among young people, Participants explored photography, graphic design, podcasts, social media content, public exhibitions, debates, concerts, and community celebrations. These activities allowed young people to express themselves, challenge stereotypes, and sharing positive messages across our community. The project engaged up to 400 young people aged 15–25, all from backgrounds with fewer opportunities. A core group of 10–15 active participants lead the work, ensuring that activities remained youth-led and relevant. The impact of the project is significant, participants gained valuable skills, confidence and opportunities that will support their future education and employment. At the same time, the wider community benefited from increased awareness and understanding of diversity, inclusion and the message Label Jars Not People. In response to recent events in Dublin, including riots and the spread of harmful narratives, this project recognised the negative impact such incidents can have on young people. We aimed to create a positive, inclusive space where solidarity, compassion, and respect for people from all backgrounds—especially refugees and migrants were actively promoted. A key need identified was that young people, particularly those from working-class communities, are often portrayed negatively in the media and rarely given a platform to share their perspectives. At the same time, misinformation and racist narratives spread rapidly through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp, influencing attitudes and creating division. Core Objectives Empower Youth Voice and Expression To provide young people with opportunities to creatively express their views, identities, and aspirations through photography, podcasts, social media content, exhibitions, and community events. Challenge Racism and Stereotypes To actively address and counter racism, prejudice, and misinformation by promoting positive stories and real-life experiences of young people from diverse backgrounds, including refugees and minority groups. Develop Digital and Media Skills To train young people in IT, media production, and digital communication so they can critically engage with online content, challenge disinformation, and create positive messaging. Promote Inclusion and Solidarity To foster a strong sense of community by bringing together young people from different cultures and backgrounds, including local youth, refugees (e.g. from Zimbabwe and Ukraine), the Traveller community, and others. Strengthen Civic Engagement To encourage young people to actively participate in their community and democratic life by engaging with local organisations, campaigns (such as the Ballyfermot For All Campaign), and decision-makers. Improve Representation of Young People To challenge negative media portrayals by showcasing young people as creative, thoughtful, and socially engaged individuals with positive ambitions for their futures. Build Intercultural Understanding To create opportunities for dialogue, exchange, and shared experiences, including potential international engagement (e.g. with refugee communities in Italy).
