BYS has identified a gap in meeting the needs of young people around their understanding of Ireland's role in Europe and identifying as European citizens, particularly those from areas marked by high disadvantage and deprivation. The participants come from DEIS schools, which focus on tackling educational disadvantages. This project provides a significant opportunity for these young people to visit Europe with their peers, overcoming challenges that would otherwise make such experiences impossible at this stage in their lives. The initiative not only exposes them to diverse European cultures but also empowers them to leverage their learning for future development as they transition from youth to adulthood. The young people's desire for this project stems from the potential it offers to broaden their horizons and foster active citizenship. Their involvement in planning, preparation, and decision-making is crucial, with BYS facilitating access to information and supporting them in realizing their goals. BYS actively engages the young people in project design, allowing them to choose destinations, ensuring their voices are heard, and acknowledging them as influential figures among their peers. BYS's participation in the Erasmus+ Programme has not only provided an engagement opportunity but has also contributed to a lasting sense of safety and security for young people and their families. The program goes beyond lip service, actively involving young people in a range of personal and social development projects, including arts, music, drama, outdoor and environmental education, and political and social programs. Participation in European projects is a key factor in this youth-work model, shaping the overall development of the participants and the organization.
