Our main objective was to empower women—particularly in rural communities—by helping them develop basic DIY skills that would boost their confidence, independence, and ability to maintain their homes. We also aimed to create inclusive, high-quality adult learning opportunities that are flexible and practical. Specifically, we wanted to develop a modular DIY Handbook, pilot practical workshops, and build a replicable model for informal peer-led learning groups. The project also aimed to promote inclusion, gender equality, and lifelong learning, while fostering a culture of sustainability, repair, and community engagement.
We applied for the DIY project to respond to the need for practical, accessible learning opportunities for adult women living in rural areas of Ireland and Spain. Many of these women face barriers to participating in traditional education or training and often lack the confidence or experience to carry out basic home maintenance tasks. The project aimed to address gaps in confidence, skills, inclusion, and self-sufficiency by offering structured DIY training in a safe, supportive environment. We wanted to empower women to take control of their homes and reduce dependence on professional services for basic maintenance tasks—while also fostering a strong sense of community and peer learning.
