The project aimed to improve the professional development of young musicians through an innovative learning approach connecting music students, aspiring luthiers and audiences. The main goal was to build a link between artistic practice and instrument craftsmanship, promoting collaborative, practical and inclusive learning. Specifically, it sought to: • Create a community of musicians and violin makers to encourage knowledge exchange and new learning opportunities. • Make violin-making training more accessible through digital tools and online documentation, reducing geographical and economic barriers. • Develop transversal skills for young musicians, such as teamwork, creativity, communication, problem-solving and audience engagement. • Promote an interdisciplinary and inclusive environment, involving students from different backgrounds and culminating in a public event showcasing the results.
The project “The Sound Post” was created to address a clear gap in the professional development of young musicians and in the transmission of traditional craftsmanship related to violin making. Although music and instrument making are closely connected, there is currently a limited interaction between musicians and luthiers. Young musicians under 35 rarely have the opportunity to understand how instruments are built, maintained and adapted to their artistic needs. At the same time, aspiring luthiers face barriers in accessing practical learning experiences and in promoting their craftsmanship beyond local contexts. The project responded to the need to modernise training pathways in the music sector by introducing a more practical, collaborative and interdisciplinary learning approach. It also aimed to reduce the geographical and economic barriers that limit access to high-quality vocational training in violin making. The initiative addressed the need to develop transversal skills for young musicians such as teamwork, project management, communication with audiences and digital competences which are increasingly essential for a sustainable professional career.
