Objectives

RECROSS pursued clear and interconnected objectives: to improve ALS care practices through knowledge exchange among organizations; to develop an innovative home assistance protocol integrating different approaches from Italy and Turkey; and to strengthen the role of patient associations within the care system. Another key objective was to create a new specialized professional profile in ALS home care, equipped with clinical, psychological, and practical competences, capable of delivering inclusive and high-quality support to patients and their families. The project also aimed to enhance the quality of life of people living with ALS by promoting a holistic, person-centered approach that addresses physical, psychological, and social needs. In line with Erasmus+ priorities, RECROSS contributed to well-being and health by developing innovative care protocols, while also addressing social assistance and welfare through improved support systems for patients and caregivers. These objectives were operationalized through the development of key outputs, including a training course delivered to 30 participants, a training guide, an handbook available in three languages, as well as capacity building and on-field experience in ALS home assista

Background

RECROSS was developed in response to the complex challenges related to ALS management, a condition with significant health and social impact that requires specialized skills and a multidisciplinary approach. At EU level, ALS has been increasingly recognized as a priority, as highlighted by the launch of the ALS Coalition at the European Parliament in March 2023, advocating for improved diagnosis, care and treatment. Within this context, the partner organizations, ASSISLA and ILKSENOL, identified the need to enhance caregivers’ competences and to develop shared and transferable protocols for home-based care, which remains fragmented across Europe. The project also responded to the increasing demand for specialized, practice-oriented training in caregiving, as well as to the need to give a stronger voice to people living with ALS and ensure access to adequate, inclusive services.RECROSS therefore addressed the need to innovate care services, improve patients’ quality of life, and support caregivers’ professional development through practical and transferable tools.
