Objectives

Through the project “Eco-Inclusion: Seeds of Change for a Sustainable Future”, the association Traguardo Europa, in collaboration with its partners Fundación Bear (Poland) and Asociación Cultural Gremio Luna (Spain), aimed to provide a concrete response to two key needs identified in its daily work with young people. On the one hand, the growing necessity to educate a new generation aware of environmental challenges and capable of adopting sustainable and responsible behaviours; on the other hand, the urgent need to create truly inclusive environments where every young person – regardless of their social, physical, cultural, or economic background – can feel welcomed, valued, and empowered as an active member of the community. The project was designed to develop a dual learning pathway – environmental and social – based on non-formal education and experiential learning methodologies. On the environmental side, participants were encouraged to critically reflect on major issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and the overexploitation of natural resources. Environmental education was not limited to theoretical knowledge; instead, it was translated into hands-on, practical activities, including creative recycling workshops, the creation and maintenance of an inclusive urban garden, energy-saving awareness campaigns, and nature-based experiential learning. These activities allowed participants to experience firsthand the impact of their daily choices, understanding that even the smallest actions can contribute to meaningful and lasting change. In parallel, Eco-Inclusion actively addressed social inclusion by creating collaborative spaces where young people with and without disabilities, those from disadvantaged or marginalised backgrounds, and peers from diverse cultural contexts could fully participate on an equal footing. The aim was not merely to “include” formally but to foster genuine opportunities for interaction, cooperation, and mutual growth, breaking down stereotypes and building a temporary community based on empathy, trust, and solidarity. The specific objectives of the project included: - Promoting an active and responsible attitude towards the environment, increasing young people’s knowledge of sustainability, recycling, energy efficiency, and urban green care. - Developing essential soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, effective communication, and creative thinking to support personal and social growth. - Encouraging intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding among young people from diverse cultural, social, and geographical backgrounds. - Highlighting and empowering the contribution of young people with disabilities or fewer opportunities, ensuring their active participation and visibility. - Building an international network of young people and organisations committed to environmental protection and social inclusion, capable of generating new initiatives beyond the project’s lifetime. - Maximising impact through dissemination, using digital tools, public events, storytelling, and multimedia materials to engage local communities and stakeholders. The Eco-Inclusion experience was conceived not as a temporary learning opportunity but as a seed of change meant to grow over time. Participants returned to their local communities more aware, motivated, and equipped to act as ambassadors of sustainability, inclusion, and solidarity. Ultimately, the project contributed to the creation of a European community of active young citizens, ready to face today’s complexities and work together towards a fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable future.
