Objectives

The “Message in a Bottle” project was conceived to stimulate young people’s critical thinking and promote a shift in their attitudes and behaviours towards minorities, diversity, and human rights. Rooted in a context of increasing social polarisation and discrimination within and beyond Europe, the project aimed to empower youth to become active promoters of inclusion, equality, and democratic values in their local communities and across borders. The core objective was to foster mutual understanding, empathy, and intercultural dialogue among young people from different backgrounds, using non-formal education and theatre as main tools of expression and learning. By bringing together 32 young participants and group leaders from Italy, Poland, Turkey and Romania, the project created a safe and creative space where ideas, experiences, and perspectives could be freely exchanged, explored, and transformed into shared actions. The project had three specific objectives: a) To identify and understand the dynamics of discrimination and intolerance against minority groups, through collective reflection, workshops and digital research activities. Participants explored historical and current examples of social exclusion, with a particular focus on how misinformation, stereotypes and privilege influence perceptions and foster injustice. b) To acquire fundamental rights and democratic values, through experiential activities including role-playing, group games, theatre-based exercises and peer-to-peer learning. This phase aimed at deepening awareness of human rights frameworks and developing civic and social competences in a dynamic and participatory environment. c) To design and implement concrete follow-up actions in their home communities, aimed at combating intolerance and promoting social cohesion. These included digital campaigns, storytelling initiatives, community volunteering, and a travelling multimedia exhibition showcasing the results and personal testimonies produced during the exchange. All activities were carried out through a combination of intercultural workshops, creative labs, theatre performances, digital media work and group reflections. Each day began with energisers and ended with structured debriefing and evaluation sessions, ensuring both emotional engagement and analytical understanding. Special attention was given to inclusion, ensuring gender balance, the presence of young people with fewer opportunities, and an inclusive, accessible format for all. The project not only strengthened the personal and professional development of the participants—enhancing their self-confidence, public speaking, leadership, teamwork, digital and intercultural skills—but also supported a strong sense of European belonging and collective responsibility. By living and learning together for seven days in Potenza, participants experienced the value of unity in diversity and the power of collaboration in facing common challenges. Ultimately, the project contributed to building a generation of young changemakers, capable of recognising and addressing discrimination, speaking up for human dignity, and turning awareness into action. The “message” symbolically launched through the project was one of hope, solidarity and democratic commitment—one that, just like a bottle at sea, may reach and inspire others far beyond the initial participants and partner organisations.
