The project “G.A.I.A. – Global Action to Save the Planet”, co-financed by the Erasmus+ program, was conceived and coordinated by the Municipality of Rosignano Monferrato (Italy), with the involvement of a consortium of European partners consisting of: Municipality of Cella Monte (Italy), La Palma del Condado Municipality (Spain), AGROM-RO Association (Romania), Active Citizens of Mediterranean (Greece) and Changemakers KSN (Hungary). The entire initiative was born from the common intent to implement a participatory, educational and inclusive path dedicated to young Europeans, called to reflect and take concrete action on the issues of environmental sustainability, climate change and social inclusion. The main objective of the project was to make the young participants real agents of change, capable of contributing to the construction of a more equitable, sustainable and resilient society. In particular, the project responded to two horizontal priorities of the Erasmus+ program: the promotion of environmental sustainability and that of social inclusion. The main idea was to propose an innovative educational model based on non-formal and informal learning, where the territory becomes a classroom, intergenerational dialogue a method and participatory action a tool for growth. The partnership worked with determination to offer 30 young people (from the five countries involved) a concrete opportunity for personal, intercultural and civic growth. The aim was to strengthen an ecological awareness in the participants, linked both to environmental protection and to knowledge of the main tools and strategies adopted by the European Union to combat climate change, primarily the European Green Deal and the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The choice of the name "GAIA", inspired by the Greek goddess of the earth, wanted to underline the idea of a deep connection between human beings and nature, a bond to be recovered and preserved. The project was born from a group of young people from Monferrato, eager to promote the green transition in their territories and to discuss experiences, ideas and virtuous practices with European peers. From this spark, a cooperation network was built that involved public administrations, youth associations, educational institutions and local entities, capable of enhancing the local context and the experiences of active citizenship. Specific objectives include: • Promote responsible, ecological and sustainable behavior among young participants; • Raise awareness on the issues of green transition, circular economy and conscious consumption; • Encourage the participation of young people with fewer opportunities, ensuring accessibility and inclusion; • Develop European key skills, including active citizenship, critical thinking, intercultural cooperation; • Strengthen the bond between young people and the territory, through the exploration of local sustainability practices in Monferrato, a UNESCO site; • Experiment with learning methods based on "learning by doing", in a multicultural context. In line with the Strategy for Inclusion and Diversity of the Erasmus+ program, GAIA has integrated activities designed to actively involve young people with fewer opportunities from the beginning, ensuring that they play a role not only as users but as co-protagonists. Participants were involved in the design, implementation and evaluation of the activities, contributing their ideas, experiences and perspectives. Finally, the local dimension of the project (the hills of Monferrato, the villages of Rosignano and Cella Monte, the food and wine heritage, the rural landscapes and sustainable agricultural experiences) offered an ideal scenario to concretely decline the major global themes. In this sense, the project was able to intertwine glocality, European citizenship and environmental sustainability, generating a path that was not limited to the duration of the mobility but laid the foundations for a transnational educational community oriented towards the future.
