The project was born from the desire to offer young people from Basilicata – and, more broadly, from the partner countries – a concrete opportunity to overcome the sense of isolation, lack of prospects, and cultural detachment that often affect peripheral areas. The initiative stemmed from a careful analysis of the needs of the local community, where depopulation, economic instability, and limited personal development opportunities remain persistent issues. Within this context, our association Musica Vita Mia, based in Brienza, aimed to create a space for encounter, expression, and dialogue through universal languages such as music and dance – powerful tools to connect people from different cultures and to build relationships founded on mutual respect and empathy. The main goal of the project was to promote social inclusion and intercultural understanding, offering young people a learning experience that went beyond the mere discovery of other cultures, encouraging instead a real change in attitudes and behaviors. At the same time, it sought to address some of the most deeply felt needs of young participants: the desire to feel part of a community, to gain confidence in their own abilities, and to develop social and communication skills that could be useful both in everyday life and in their future careers. Through the activities carried out – such as artistic workshops, group reflections, dance and music sessions, and intercultural exchanges – the project encouraged dialogue and collaboration, turning cultural differences into a resource rather than a barrier. In a historical period marked by economic crises, international conflicts, and growing social divisions, we considered it crucial to foster social cohesion and peaceful coexistence. The project therefore aimed to provide participants with the tools to understand and manage cultural tensions, nurturing empathy and openness towards others. The cooperation with partner organizations – CIOFF Bulgaria and Casa do Povo de Cacia (Portugal) – was essential in enriching the experience. Their contribution made it possible to compare perspectives and practices from different cultural contexts, enabling mutual learning and the exchange of good practices. This transnational dimension strengthened the participants’ awareness of belonging to a broader European community, united by shared values such as human dignity, equality, and solidarity. From an educational point of view, the project aimed to stimulate the personal growth of each participant by enhancing their social competences and teamwork abilities. The young participants had the opportunity to experience international collaboration, which helped them to build self-confidence, discover their talents, and develop a more positive vision of their future. The experience also encouraged a sense of active citizenship, inspiring them to see themselves as agents of change within their own communities. The specific objectives of the project can be summarized in five main directions: 1. To foster social inclusion, counteracting the sense of marginalization experienced by young people in rural or peripheral areas. 2. To strengthen intercultural understanding through concrete experiences of exchange and artistic collaboration. 3. To promote personal growth and self-confidence, helping participants to recognize and value their own potential. 4. To develop social and relational competences, such as effective communication, teamwork, and conflict management. 5. To promote European values of peace, solidarity, and mutual respect, encouraging the creation of lasting bonds among young people from different countries. Through the universal language of art and the direct experience of collaboration, the project offered participants a unique opportunity to learn to listen, understand, and value differences. Many young people expressed the feeling of having “regained confidence in the future,” of having found new motivations, and of feeling part of something greater than themselves. This outcome confirms the validity of the approach adopted: starting from concrete needs and responding with simple yet deeply human tools such as creativity, empathy, and cooperation.
