Objectives

VERIFY originates from an idea of young volunteers and participants of EUROSUD who, together with young participants from partner countries, decided to put into practice the skills developed during Erasmus+ mobilities, catalyzing the inputs received on the crucial role of Citizen Journalism in representing diversity, evidence-based fact-checking operations, and the use of participatory digital tools. Consistent with the previous youth work carried out by EUROSUD, this Youth Exchange is conceived as a follow-up to the skills developed and a means to give space to the needs, activism, and curiosity of the young people involved in exploring participatory journalism in an intercultural context, to develop new tools for Citizen Journalism to represent diversity with accurate information. Listening to our communities' need to address social challenges that are not represented in traditional media, we want to promote alternative forms of participation and e-participation, developing participatory journalism skills and involving young citizens from underrepresented and marginalized categories in collecting, editing, producing, and distributing news and information. To do this, it is necessary to educate on the use of new media and their information processes, which, while ensuring the immediacy of information, have also contributed to the infodemic phenomenon: all the young people who collaborated on VERIFY, despite very different backgrounds, agreed that in the digital age, an excessive amount of often inaccurate and unverified information circulates, making it challenging to navigate, especially for young people entering civil society for the first time. Therefore, our aim is to develop skills and a broader attitude towards research, critical thinking, and analysis. Before the advent of non-traditional and digital media (webzines, online magazines, live reporting platforms), citizens were consumers of information; now, especially young people closely connected with new ICT, are creators of information themselves. VERIFY is conceived as a response to these needs to investigate the challenges and opportunities of digital information tools, and as an empowerment process for all young people directly and indirectly involved, to create a safe space for all participants, aimed at developing Citizen Journalism skills, where a non-professional journalist citizen uses dissemination tools - especially digital ones - to inform and transmit accurate and verified information as a news creator. Using non-formal education, peer-to-peer education, cooperative learning and partecipatory approach, we aim to the following objectives: 1. Raise awareness and promote participatory journalism as a tool for civic engagement and the representation of marginalized communities; 2. Develop Citizen Journalism skills to support the democratic principles of the European Union, its values, and its citizenship; 3. Develop evidence-based fact-checking skills for Citizen Journalism, with digital tools and platforms to verify the correctness, accuracy, timeliness, source, relevance, and perspective of information; 4. Promote alternative forms of community e-participation, supporting the digital literacy within the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies); 5. Share and discuss best practices to generate decentralized, non-profit, and accurate information through Citizen Journalism. 6. Increase the ability to express the needs of the community and young people with fewer opportunities and not represented by traditional media with digital tools, discovering topics excluded from traditional media and encouraging engagement in the community; 7. Compile with participants a Decalogue for the correct information of participatory journalism to be shared in the final conference and in follow-up activities within the partnership; 8. Provide opportunities for non-formal and informal learning to future YW facilitators and young people with fewer opportunities and strengthen partnership cooperation.
