Objectives

Stereotypes: trick or treat? was born out of a desire to do something against the grain: to enhance cultural stereotyping in order to know and understand cultures. We felt the need to transform these stereotypes as a means of promoting harmonious and inclusive coexistence and a tool for investigation. Indeed, in such a globalized world, it is crucial to understand and appreciate cultural diversity instead of being influenced by preconceptions and generalizations. Having participated in many youth exchanges, we have realized how ingrained certain ideas we have about our own culture or those we do not know well are. These same ideas sometimes turn out to be a lot of fun, but other times they can be offensive and fall back on prejudice. So, actually wanting to know what lies behind a stereotype and what sometimes characterizes a culture in and for certain aspects and reasons, including historical social and cultural, we asked ourselves, is it really so easy to believe that everything is either black or white? Or is it perhaps possible that there are shades in between? The need to write this project emerged from the personal experiences of our group members, who have often experienced misunderstandings and judgments based on cultural stereotypes. It was time to write an exchange and make it an ideal opportunity to create a cross-cultural environment in which to understand stereotypes in order to silence prejudices. The current context of cultural tensions and divisions prompted us to take action to contribute to positive change by promoting understanding and solidarity among young people from different cultural backgrounds. How? The exchange activities aim to bridge the gap between distorted cultural perceptions and reality through tools that will help us clearly distinguish between stereotype and prejudice. Indeed, confusion between these concepts can contribute to the creation of cultural barriers and unwarranted distances. We believe that educating ourselves and our peers about this difference will foster a more open and informed approach to cross-cultural interactions. With this project, we want to create a tangible impact on cultural perception for a generation of young people who are more open, understanding, aware and knowledgeable about their cultural traditions. We planned to proceed as follows: - Stereotype Analysis: participants will explore and identify cultural stereotypes present in their countries of origin, with a focus on media and social representations. - Discussion on the Origin of Stereotypes: We will hold discussion sessions and workshops to understand the roots of stereotypes and how they have developed over time. This will help us crumble perceptions, understand their origin, and promote a more balanced view. - Differentiating Stereotype and Prejudice: Through hands-on activities and discussions, we will explore the fine line between stereotype and prejudice. The goal is to make participants aware of the need to avoid hasty judgments based on generalizations. - Creation of videos and reels: Participants will collaborate on the creation of materials, such as videos, reels and presentations, to spread awareness about the nature of stereotypes and their influence on cultural perceptions, so that we can reach a wider audience - Experience Exchange: Through team building activities and cultural exchange, participants will have the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the diversity present in the group, personally debunking common stereotypes. - Community Outreach and Involvement: We will organize several visits and a small local event to engage the Mussomeli community. This is to give even a small town like ours a chance to be able to open up more to other cultures and not be influenced by what is seen or heard. By implementing this project, we expect to contribute to the creation of a more inclusive society by promoting mutual understanding and embracing cultural stereotypes as a tool for understanding cultures other than one's own. We strongly believe that participants at the end of the project will have a heightened awareness of cultural stereotypes and their implications, develop critical skills in discerning between stereotypes and cultural reality, contributing to a more open and inclusive outlook, moreover, they will form strong and lasting bonds, contributing to a cross-cultural network of engaged and aware youth. Finally, the impact of the project will be measured through the participants' ongoing involvement in outreach activities and positive feedback from the communities involved.
