Objectives

The main goal was to provide a travel and learning experience to two groups of young people in a setting different from the one they are used to. These young individuals would not have otherwise had the opportunity, due to difficulties in understanding the programme and applying independently to the centralized DiscoverEU action, or because their families could not financially support such an experience. The participants not only came from a rural area, but also faced challenges in accessing information, seizing opportunities, and stepping out of their comfort zones. Our project helped these young people to take part in the initiative and travel on an equal footing with their peers, promoting awareness and access to the DiscoverEU programme, while giving them the opportunity to express themselves and take on responsibility in the planning and implementation of the trip. Equally important was the opportunity to encounter and appreciate the diversity of European cultures, nature, and lifestyles; to strengthen mutual support and peer collaboration throughout each day of the journey; to foster a sense of European belonging; and to encourage active participation starting from the itinerary planning stage. In light of youth-related news events in 2023–2024, the project originated from the idea that those who accept the challenge of breaking away from certain patterns could instead be exposed to cultures where the role model is not the delinquent peer, but the young person who embarks on a meaningful journey at the onset of adulthood. In this context, the DiscoverEU Inclusion programme played a key role — not only by offering one of these young people a guided travel experience rooted in certain values, but also by allowing them to become a protagonist and a positive role model upon returning. The objectives, all of which were fully achieved, were as follows: - To provide a travel and learning experience to two groups of five young people in a context different from the one they were used to. In particular, to help these youth take a trip they would never have been able to do on their own, because: they didn’t know how to apply to the centralized DiscoverEU action; their families were unable to finance such an experience (and perhaps didn’t even see its value); Additional goals included: - To showcase the diversity of European cultures, nature, and ways of life. - To strengthen the sense of identity by also involving a country like Norway, which is outside the EU. - To motivate young people to participate in democratic life, and above all to develop their own views on the need to expand the Union, especially in light of ongoing debates driven by recent crises and wars at our borders. Following the 2024 European elections, to introduce these young people to tools for civic engagement, such as the "together.eu" initiative.
