Objectives

The "EU ROots" project addresses the needs of young people with fewer opportunities from the Ambito Territoriale Sociale of Casarano, a rural area in southern Puglia. In our territory, there is a strong need to build a new inclusive "bridge" between young people and European Institutions. School dropout rates, lack of opportunities for young people, Euroscepticism, and physical distance from Italian cities and European capitals make it difficult to foster a sense of belonging to a single large community and the perception of being a "European Citizen". For this reason, EU ROots aims to offer 20 young people experiencing social, cultural, and economic disadvantages an opportunity for personal growth through the enhancement or acquisition of transversal skills (teamwork, planning, time management, problem-solving, intercultural skills, etc.), as well as linguistic and digital skills. Through visits to historical sites, institutions, museums, and exhibitions in the main European cities symbolic of the EU, they will be able to relive the key moments that have led to the construction of the European Union as we know it today. Moreover, they will learn about the tools available to them to make their voices heard and become conscious builders of the EU's future. The young people will be actively involved in the planning and initial preparation processes, monitoring the accessibility of places and means of transportation, and deciding, together with the FPD staff, on risk mitigation measures and communication activities throughout the journey. The various activities preceding, accompanying, and following the EU ROots project will also see significant use of digital tools for organizing the trip, its implementation, and documentation (production of reels, podcasts, and posts on social networks). Participants returning from the journey will thus become "European Witnesses," sharing their experience with their community and supporting the preparation of young people participating in subsequent mobilities, acting as multipliers and amplifying the impact of the initiative.
