The project is inspired by Marcel Proust's famous aphorism: "A true voyage of discovery is not seeking new lands but having new eyes". The "New Eyes" project was created with the aim of training young people with fewer opportunities to discover through travel: travel is intended not only as a physical path to travel through, but above all as a discovery and change of one's own individuality, of the others and, finally, of the local, national and European community. Although traveling outside Italy has become increasingly cheaper, some of the most vulnerable groups of the young population are unable to access experiences similar to those that many of their peers can, on the contrary, undertake several times during a single year. On the one hand, this situation of inequality fuels the condition of fragility and vulnerability of young people with fewer opportunities; on the other, it can consolidate a purely utilitarian vision of life which is already very present in families of origin and which does not recognize travel as having a function of growth, training and emancipation. Many young people who attend our Center in Thiene (Vicenza) come from vulnerable groups in society (economic disadvantage, educational poverty, migrating families) or find themselves in conditions of individual risk (school dropout, learning and behavioral disorders, in conflict with the law). Precisely this disadvantageous condition is the cause of the obstacles that limit the mobility opportunities of our young people, who can reach the age of 18 even without ever having made a prolonged trip alone, with friends or with family. The DiscoverEU program represents a last opportunity to experience a journey of discovery before leaving the field of education and entering the dynamics of work, an opportunity that could open up new horizons of life for our young people, not necessarily far from home but certainly with a broad outlook thanks to "new eyes". Mobility activities are co-planned with young people who can therefore independently identify the themes and stages that characterize the journey. The first objective of the project is therefore to create a space where young people with fewer opportunities can develop social, organizational and intercultural skills even before setting off on a journey, by comparing themselves with the other members of the group, with their companions and through online research. The role of ENGIM is, on the one hand, to stimulate and guide this participatory process so that it is logistically feasible within the resources and timeframes foreseen; on the other, to suggest activities and/or visits to youth, social and/or cultural organizations that also encourage reflection and learning on the priorities of the Erasmus+ program such as, for example, civic commitment and democratic participation, environmental sustainability, inclusion of people with fewer opportunities and digital transformation.
