The project aimed to offer five young people aged 18, accompanied by two youth workers, a meaningful experience of mobility, discovery and personal growth through a five-day journey to Vienna and Bratislava. Some of the participants came from the residential communities of our association, so the project was designed not only as a trip abroad, but as an educational opportunity able to combine autonomy, relationship-building and cultural learning. One of the main objectives was to help the participants discover a different way of travelling. We wanted them to experience Vienna and Bratislava not only through the most touristic places, but also through parks, gardens and natural areas. In this way, the project promoted a more attentive, reflective and sustainable way of exploring cities, showing that travel can also mean slowing down, observing, being in contact with nature and discovering beauty in everyday public spaces. Another important objective was personal development. Through the preparation activities and the trip itself, the young people had the possibility to strengthen their self-confidence, curiosity and sense of responsibility. Experiencing a journey in another country, sharing daily decisions, adapting to a new environment and living together as a group helped them grow in autonomy and awareness. For some participants, this was especially valuable because it offered a positive experience outside their usual context and allowed them to recognise their own abilities and resources. The project also aimed to strengthen relationships within the group. Spending time together during the preparatory meetings and throughout the journey created the conditions for trust, mutual support and a stronger sense of belonging. For our association, this relational dimension is very important: we believe that young people grow through meaningful experiences shared with others, in a climate of respect, listening and participation. The preparatory phase had a clear educational value. During spring and summer 2025, the participants took part in meetings where they watched films about the history of Vienna, cooked a typical Viennese dinner together and created handmade travel diaries. These activities helped them approach the trip with curiosity and active involvement. The diaries in particular encouraged them to collect memories, impressions and reflections, giving personal meaning to the experience. Finally, the project aimed to give value to what had been lived by sharing it with others. After the trip, the group presented the experience publicly at “La Vispa Teresa”, a youth centre near our association. This was an important moment of reflection and dissemination, allowing the participants to tell their story, recognise what they had learned and return something to the local community. The objectives of the project were to foster personal growth, autonomy, group cohesion, openness to new cultural and natural environments, and a more conscious way of travelling. In line with the values of La Strada – Der Weg, the project placed the dignity, potential and active participation of each young person at the centre, using mobility as a tool for learning, inclusion and transformation.
