Objectives

The “Balkan Express” project aimed to achieve multiple objectives through an educational journey across the Western Balkans. First of all, it sought to promote peace education, using the participants’ direct experience to better understand the consequences of conflicts and the value of dialogue and reconciliation. By visiting symbolic sites of recent wars, the project intended to provide an opportunity to reflect on historical wounds and on the challenges of building peaceful coexistence. In parallel, the initiative aimed to combat stereotypes and prejudices by fostering encounters with different cultures and traditions. Through exchanges with local organizations engaged in interethnic dialogue and in the promotion of tolerance, the project sought to highlight diversity as a source of richness for both individuals and the wider community. Another key objective concerned the personal development of participants, as the journey was designed to help young people step out of their comfort zone, improving autonomy, self-confidence, and problem-solving skills. Their direct involvement in planning the itinerary and managing the logistics of the trip was meant to strengthen their sense of responsibility and teamwork. Finally, the project aspired to stimulate a sense of European belonging, encouraging young people to reflect on the role of active citizenship in a global context. Through immersion in intercultural experiences and encounters with local associations, participants were able to acquire competences useful for their personal and professional paths, contributing to the construction of a fairer and more inclusive society.
