The project aimed at: 1. strengthening the skills of young people and youth workers in the field of cultural inclusion in order to promote free access to art and culture by people with cognitive disabilities, through educational activities and accessible communication systems; 2. bringing young people with cognitive disabilities closer to culture and museums.; 3.raise awareness of cognitive accessibility, mental health and the importance of cultural heritage as a tool for social inclusion.
The CULTURACCESS project was developed in response to the increasing need to promote cultural inclusion and accessibility for people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities, who are often excluded from cultural participation due to cognitive, communicative, and social barriers. Despite growing awareness of physical accessibility, cultural environments such as museums and heritage sites remain largely inaccessible from a cognitive perspective. Complex language, lack of visual supports, sensory overload, and non-inclusive educational approaches limit the participation of individuals with cognitive disabilities. At the same time, youth workers and volunteers often lack specific competences, tools, and methodologies to design and facilitate inclusive cultural experiences. The project addressed the following needs: Strengthening the skills of youth workers in cultural inclusion Promoting accessible communication systems (easy-to-read, visual supports, storytelling) Enhancing participation of young people with cognitive disabilities in cultural life Raising awareness on mental health, inclusion, and cultural rights Developing innovative practices combining culture, creativity, and digital tools
