The project “Open Your Eyes” was created in response to the growing spread of misinformation, propaganda, and manipulative content in the digital environment. We identified that young people are constantly exposed to large amounts of information through social media and online platforms, but often lack the critical thinking skills necessary to objectively evaluate information sources and recognise disinformation. The main objective of the project was to strengthen young people’s critical thinking, media literacy, and active civic participation. Through non-formal education methods, trainings, debates, discussions, social experiments, research activities, conferences, and a youth festival, we aimed to provide young people with practical tools to identify misinformation, analyse information critically, and become more conscious and responsible media users. Another important objective was to encourage young people to become active participants in democratic society by expressing their opinions, participating in discussions, and taking initiative within their communities. The project also aimed to promote European values such as democracy, freedom of expression, tolerance, inclusion, and active citizenship. During the implementation of the project, we sought to create a safe and motivating environment where young people could learn from experts, exchange ideas with peers, cooperate with journalists, decision makers, and youth workers, and share their own experiences with wider audiences through youth-to-youth learning methods. The project also aimed to strengthen cooperation between youth organisations, schools, youth workers, and local communities in addressing the issue of disinformation and promoting media literacy among young people. By implementing the project, we wanted to empower young people to “open their eyes”, think critically, take responsibility for the information they share, and contribute to creating a more informed, democratic, and resilient society.
