Objectives

Europe currently faces unprecedented environmental, climate, and sustainability challenges, presenting urgent calls for action to safeguard our planet and ensure a sustainable future. These challenges include biodiversity loss, climate change, resource depletion, and pollution, which threaten the well-being of both current and future generations. In response to these pressing issues, the European Commission has introduced the European Green Deal, a comprehensive and ambitious initiative aimed at making the EU the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The European Green Deal outlines a transformative agenda to protect, conserve, and enhance the EU's natural capital while promoting regenerative growth models that prioritize environmental sustainability. It seeks to address the root causes of environmental degradation, promote sustainable resource management, and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Furthermore, the European Green Deal emphasizes the importance of a just transition, ensuring that no one is left behind in the shift towards a sustainable economy. Transitioning to sustainability requires collaborative efforts and engagement from a diverse range of stakeholders, including governments, businesses, civil society, and local communities. Co-creation and participation of youth are essential for generating inclusive, solution-oriented approaches that address the complex challenges of sustainability. It is crucial to empower individuals and communities to actively participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives and environments. In this context, rural communities play a vital role in the transition to sustainability. Vibrant rural communities are essential for fostering resilience, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting sustainable land use practices. However, rural areas often face unique challenges, including depopulation, economic decline, and limited access to resources and services. Empowering rural communities particularly youth to become drivers of sustainability requires addressing these challenges through targeted interventions and inclusive development strategies. The Rural Youth Ambassadors (RYA) project was created to empower young people from rural areas to actively participate in decision-making processes related to their communities and environmental transitions. By engaging with a small group of young individuals from diverse rural backgrounds, especially those facing fewer opportunities, the project aimed to equip them with the necessary tools, knowledge, and skills to engage in meaningful dialogue with policymakers and advocate for their community and environmental needs. Through capacity-building activities, training sessions on Advocacy and experiential learning opportunities, RYA participants developed key competencies related to environmental stewardship, leadership, and cross-cultural cooperation. They also had the opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences, and collaborate with peers from different cultural and geographical backgrounds, fostering cross-cultural understanding and cooperation. Furthermore, the RYA project emphasized the importance of a just transition in rural communities, ensuring that the transition to sustainability is equitable, inclusive, and socially just. By promoting dialogue, cooperation, and collaboration between young people, local authorities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, the project facilitated the development of sustainable solutions that meet the needs of both current and future generations. In addition to promoting environmental awareness and youth empowerment, the RYA project created a lasting impact on rural communities by fostering vibrant, resilient, and sustainable communities. By empowering young people to become agents of change in their communities, the project contributed to the long-term sustainability and well-being of rural areas, ensuring that they remain vibrant and thriving for generations to come.
