The “DiscoverEU: From East to West” project was designed with the primary aim of empowering young people with fewer opportunities—specifically 18-year-olds from North Macedonia by offering them a transformative and educational travel experience across Europe. The project focused on two interconnected journeys: exploring the East (Bulgaria and Romania) and discovering the West (Italy), enabling participants to experience the cultural, historical, and geographical diversity of Europe in a meaningful way. The core objectives of the project were: Fostering Inclusion and Equal Access: The project aimed to ensure that young people who face socio-economic, geographical, or educational barriers could benefit from European mobility programs. By participating in DiscoverEU, they gained equal opportunities to explore other countries, connect with peers from different cultures, and develop a sense of European belonging. Enhancing Cultural Awareness and European Identity: Through visits to culturally significant sites such as the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, the Colosseum in Rome, and Vatican City, the participants deepened their understanding of Europe’s diverse heritage. These experiences helped reinforce a shared European identity while celebrating local distinctiveness. Developing Key Competences and Life Skills: The project provided opportunities for young participants to strengthen essential competences such as communication in foreign languages, intercultural interaction, navigation in unfamiliar urban environments, teamwork, and decision-making. Many experienced their first ferry and train rides, used metro systems, and organized aspects of their daily travel, which promoted autonomy and confidence. Promoting Sustainable Travel and Environmental Awareness: A key element of the project was the emphasis on green transportation. Participants traveled only by train, bus, ferry, and local metro systems, reducing the carbon footprint of the journey. Eco-sustainable accommodation was prioritized whenever available (best example was accommodation "hu Roma camping in town"), raising awareness about environmental responsibility. Encouraging Social Participation and Active Citizenship: By meeting locals, sharing experiences, and discussing their journeys on social media and in newsletters, participants became more engaged in their communities and more aware of the value of civic engagement within the European context. Ultimately, the project aspired to inspire curiosity, expand horizons, and prepare young people with fewer opportunities to become more active, open-minded, and capable European citizens. It succeeded in creating life-changing memories and learning experiences, rooted in Erasmus+ values of inclusion, education, and unity through diversity.
