Objectives

The project had three main objectives: 1. Support for the mental and physical health of the participants 2. Environmental awareness and sustainability and 3. Inclusion. The first objective of this project was to help the participants realise and appreciate the role of outdoor activities to improve mental and physical well-being. For the Maltese participants, most of whom live in a restricted urban environment, exploring and engaging with the natural, green and open environment in Slovenia was an amazing opportunity to see the world from a completely new perspective. They started to appreciate more how being immersed in a natural environment is conducive to better mental health and deeper connections with others. The Slovenian participants learned to appreciate what they have and see the need to protect their environment and enjoy its value in offering them peace of mind and wellbeing. Through the second objective, the project aimed to create awareness of environmental endangerment and pollution and in turn, strive towards a more sustainable future. They could see the limitations of their small country, while also appreciating the need to preserve and appreciate what they have, even in a small country. Thirdly, the value of inclusion was explored through informal and nonformal activities throughout the exchange. The participants included young people with various obstacles, and having the possibility to participate in such an activity was for many of them a unique experience. As an added aim, it also helped the participants understood the impact and potential of technology as a tool to influence attitudes and behaviours towards the environment. Through the project, participants enhanced their critical thinking abilities, developed a deeper understanding of advocacy and active citizenship, strengthened their soft skills, and cultivated the confidence to step outside their comfort zones while fostering independent thinking. This project provided a supportive environment where participants could freely communicate and connect without fear of judgment or exclusion, express their ideas and collaborate together. Furthermore, it gave the participants the opportunity to work with organisations from a different country giving the added value of intercultural learning, and mobility opportunities that support the Erasmus+ objectives. The project managed to create a lasting impact on the participants’ mindset. By addressing various environmental issues and raising awareness through non formal and fun activities, and with well-designed debriefing, it challenged the participants to look at themselves and the environment from new perspectives and inspired them to take responsibility for protecting the environment and become more engaged as active citizens. For most of the participants the exchange was an eye opener that led them to appreciate their environment, understand the challenges and what actions they can take, as well as experience the advantages and disadvantages of very different environments.
