Objectives

As a youth organization, we support young people and youth workers/educators in creating and utilizing non-formal methodologies that are effective in fostering the development of young individuals. We had experience in employing the outdoors as a highly effective tool in youth work, and we aimed to share our expertise with other organizations to develop methodologies that could have a broader impact at both local and European levels. This project explored the value of the outdoors as a learning tool when accompanied by guided reflection. It operated on the premise that a challenging experience in outdoor environments, supported by debriefing and reflective moments, could leave a lasting impact on the participants, particularly the youth. Since most of the partners work with young people with fewer opportunities, the project also aimed at understanding better how the outdoor adventure methodology could be used to support these young people more effectively. The training engaged youth workers/educators in activities that presented challenges that were demanding yet achievable. The focus of the training course was on how to make the outdoors more accessible to encourage young people to step beyond their comfort zones while remaining within their learning zones. This was accomplished in a fun and safe environment that fostered trust and learning.
