Objectives

The project “Beauty in the Beast” was designed as an exploration, a disruption, and a celebration. At its core, we wanted to create a transformative learning space where young people could critically examine and redefine beauty and attraction—both as personal experiences and as social constructs shaped by culture, media, and expectations. We live in a world that often promotes narrow, commercialized, and superficial definitions of beauty. These ideals can deeply affect self-esteem, mental health, and interpersonal relationships—especially among young people. With this in mind, our primary goal was to foster critical thinking, self-expression, and self-acceptance in a supportive and creative environment. We wanted participants to unpack how they view themselves and others, and to recognize the influence of societal beauty standards on their identities, relationships, and emotional well-being. Specifically, our project aimed to: 1. Promote Media Literacy & Critical Awareness One key objective was to help participants analyze how beauty and attraction are portrayed in media, marketing, and online spaces. We explored how these portrayals shape perceptions, expectations, and insecurities—particularly around gender, body image, and self-worth. Through workshops and discussions, we aimed to increase awareness of digital manipulation, unrealistic ideals, and commercial pressures. 2. Create Space for Honest Dialogue and Vulnerability We wanted to foster open, judgment-free conversations where participants could speak honestly about their experiences with self-image, attraction, insecurity, and pressure to conform. Activities like “The Masks We Wear,” story circles, and roleplays gave participants the opportunity to reflect, connect, and share their stories in a supportive community. 3. Redefine Beauty & Attraction Through Personal and Cultural Lenses Another objective was to explore how beauty and attraction are defined differently across cultures, communities, and individuals. Through intercultural exchange, personal reflection, and creative expression, participants were encouraged to challenge stereotypes and move toward more inclusive, diverse, and holistic understandings of what is beautiful and desirable. 4. Empower Self-Love, Confidence, and Authentic Expression By encouraging participants to express themselves through creative formats—such as theatre, filmmaking, visual arts, and group campaigns—we aimed to shift the focus from external validation to internal confidence. Participants were guided to explore their own values, inner strengths, and identities beyond appearance. Activities like “My Self-Love Story,” “Mirror Mirror,” and the “Media Campaign for Real Beauty” embodied this goal. 5. Strengthen Empathy, Connection, and Social Inclusion Through working in diverse, mixed teams, we promoted empathy, collaboration, and meaningful human connection. By listening to others' experiences and showing up with vulnerability, participants gained tools to better support themselves and their peers in navigating the pressures of attraction, image, and acceptance in today’s world. 6. Use Creativity and Performance to Reflect and Express We used performance-based learning (roleplay, short films, debate, visual storytelling) as powerful tools to reflect the absurdity, pressure, and emotional reality behind beauty ideals—and to imagine new ones. The final Oscar-style ceremony celebrated not only creativity but also the emotional journey each group had gone through. In short, Beauty in the Beast was not only about unpacking beauty standards but about healing, reclaiming, and rewriting them. We wanted participants to walk away with: A stronger sense of self Greater compassion for others Sharper tools for decoding media And the courage to define beauty and attraction on their own terms This project was about finding the beauty in places society often overlooks—especially within ourselves.
