Objectives

By implementing the "Green IQ" project, we aimed to address the urgent environmental challenges outlined in the strategic agenda of the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) through Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17. Our project sought to tackle global environmental change, global warming, carbon emission reduction, and energy protection from economic, social, and environmental perspectives. This initiative was a response not only to European issues but also to global environmental challenges. Our project aimed to engage young people in understanding and actively participating in solutions that align with the European Green Deal's objectives to modernize the EU, conserve natural resources, and ensure a sustainable future. The European Green Deal's goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 was central to our educational objectives. We focused on educating young participants from Curaçao, the Netherlands, Estonia, and Hungary about the negative impacts of societal actions on the climate and environment, as emphasized by the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNCCC). This project aligned with the main goals of the Erasmus+ Programme, focusing on the environment and combating climate change, which are key EU values and Erasmus+ topics. The project involved young people and youth workers collaboratively working to change their living habits to support the European Green Deal. We explored how individual actions, such as carbon footprints, affect the environment, and emphasized gaining new knowledge and skills to address climate change effectively, not just in Europe but globally. Our project supported the growth and development of young people in Europe and Curaçao by enabling them to learn and gain experience through the European Educational Area's focus on the environment, sustainability, and green transitions. By educating young people about sustainability, we helped them become more active citizens, which aligns with the European Union's objectives to engage young people, promote equality, and foster inclusive societies. This project contributed to the European Youth Goals of the EU Youth Strategy 2019-2027 by promoting education and training, and by encouraging non-formal and informal learning methods which increased youth involvement. Moreover, the project was designed to help participants learn about each other's cultures and enhance their connection with European values, fostering skills such as teamwork and mutual respect, and combating stereotypes. Our efforts supported the European Commission's goals for 2019-2024, focusing on environmental awareness and digital skills, strengthening Europe by equipping young people with necessary skills and promoting core values such as fairness and respect for rights. Additionally, it is important to note that the project's topics were particularly relevant to the people of Curaçao, aligning with the Government of Curaçao's National Development Plan 2015-2030, which emphasizes environmental care (SDGs 7 & 14) such as ensuring access to affordable and clean energy and protecting marine life. This relevance ensured that the project's impact was deeply felt locally and contributed meaningfully to addressing specific environmental objectives in Curaçao. Even though the project required 22 young participants to fly across the ocean to Curaçao, resulting in a significant CO2 footprint, the impact of their experience was profound and is expected to have lasting positive environmental effects. The intense and hands-on nature of the project's activities provided these participants with a deep understanding of sustainability issues and practical solutions to environmental challenges. This awareness and skill set are anticipated to inspire and equip them to implement significant, beneficial changes in their communities, contributing to long-term environmental improvement. The potential for these young individuals to act as catalysts for broader ecological change and awareness far outweighs the initial environmental cost of their travel, making the overall impact of the project decidedly positive in terms of global sustainability efforts. In summary, the "Green IQ" project aimed not only to educate participants about environmental challenges but also to actively involve them in creating sustainable solutions, thereby empowering them to contribute to a green future and become responsible, proactive citizens on a local and global scale.
