We believe that meaningful initiative by young people forms a foundation for the future of our society. In times of challenges that we are facing these days – political polarisation, environmental changes, rapid development of technology, housing crisis – it's more important than ever to get youngsters actively participating in civic life and learning to navigate the diversity that European society represents – to strengthen their sense of togetherness and collectively find solutions towards building a better future. Relying on this perspective, Motion Pictures! came to life as a youth exchange addressing inclusion in European society, especially inclusion of marginalized youth that have fewer chances to go beyond borders and create connections with their international neighbours. As a result, in Motion Pictures! 48 youngsters came to the exchange and built up their own international community, creating it around their common interests – movement and movie making. On one hand, what we wanted to achieve by implementing this project was to facilitate networking between youngsters with diverse backgrounds – cultural, social, educational – in order to foster a sense of inclusion and diversity among them, and build a feeling of togetherness. We wanted them to have a chance to work and learn in an intercultural group, and therefore celebrate diversity, challenge stereotypes and highlight the richness of their different cultures, backgrounds and identities. On the other hand, we wanted to give youngsters an impulse to foster their active attitude as European citizens, through creating the exchange together with a purpose for themselves and for the society. In order to achieve these, within the project's context youngsters came together and co-created their collective experience. They organised for each other learning activities, exchanged interests in movement, dance, movie making and photography, reflected on their learning, took care of their living space, cooked together, and eventually used all what they learned to create short movies addressing socially relevant topics, that they shared later on in their follow-up actions, exchanging their experience on and creating impact in their communities. It didn't matter the level of skills, background or education – each person was welcome to join and exchange – a movement, national dance, idea for pictures, video concepts, etc. This showed participants that there is space to appreciate and include everybody, as well as that there is valuable potential in the diversity that they represent together – potential to build a nourishing community, a sample of what the European Union is. In a ripple effect, participants took their experience from the Preparatory Visit (PV) and the Youth Exchange (YE) and shared it with partner organisations, their local communities, and local stakeholders, stepping into the role of active citizens and multiplying the impact of the project. The project objectives were: • To gather 8 group leaders and 8 youngsters for the PV in order to design and shape the activities of the YE and local actions; • To gather 8 filmmakers and 40 dancers for the YE, ensuring that 80% of the group is of youngsters with fewer opportunities; • To create a platform for young people from a background of fewer opportunities to connect and foster intercultural dialogue; • To support participants’ personal growth by helping them develop new competencies, skills and attitudes; • Support youngsters in improving physical and mental wellbeing in a safe environment; • Boost the creativity and innovative thinking to find solutions in their life; • To cooperate with partner organisations and local actors who work with youngsters of fewer opportunities and to enrich our methodology and international cooperation skills; • To create 8 short movies transmitting a message to the local communities of youngsters, supporting their active participation in society and creating inclusion with people in their communities; • Raise awareness about socially relevant topics and thus stimulate engagement in society and active participation.
