This project was inspired by relevant challenges our environment is facing. For instance, air pollution, recognized by the European Environment Agency as Europe's most significant environmental health hazard, contributes to approximately 400,000 premature deaths annually. In response, the European Commission introduced the European Green Deal in 2020, aiming for a more sustainable EU economy and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Furthermore, about 60% of Europe's aquatic ecosystems are in poor condition due to pollution and other human activities. In light of these challenges, the “Green Heart Volunteers” project emerged as a vital initiative, motivating young Europeans to engage in environmental volunteering. Our project underscored the profound impact volunteering could have on both individual growth and broader societal and environmental welfare. We focused on opportunities like the European Solidarity Corps (ESC), enabling youth to contribute to ecological and community projects both domestically and abroad. We made efforts to demonstrate that volunteering could bring new purpose to lives, regardless of one's background. With a commitment to inclusivity, we actively involved young people from diverse circumstances, including those from ethnic minorities, low-income families, and remote areas. Our project's goals included: - Inspiring young people to participate in voluntary activities locally and internationally. - Facilitating the sharing of volunteer experiences among youth across Europe. - Highlighting the societal value of volunteering and active citizenship. - Increasing awareness of climate change and its environmental impact. - Empowering youth to engage with causes they are passionate about. - Fostering essential skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving through volunteering. - Supporting the Erasmus+ programme, the ESC, and non-formal education. - Enhancing respect for cultural diversity and intercultural competencies.
