Objectives

The project “Cultural Storytelling Canvas: Crafting Narratives for Inclusion, Democracy, and the Environment!” aimed to bring together young people from five different European countries to foster intercultural understanding, promote active citizenship, and equip participants with key competences through storytelling and non-formal learning methods. Our main objective was to enable young people to discover, appreciate, and share cultural narratives—legends, customs, values, and lived experiences—in order to combat xenophobia, stereotypes, and nationalism. In a context where political apathy, digital isolation, and social polarization are increasing across Europe, we aimed to facilitate meaningful, human-to-human contact as a “socialization exercise” that fosters mutual respect and connection. Specifically, the objectives were: Promoting intercultural dialogue and inclusion We brought together 41 young participants from Türkiye, Greece, Slovakia, Spain, and the Netherlands to explore each other’s cultures through storytelling. By engaging in structured workshops and team-based activities, they not only learned about each other’s traditions and values, but also experienced surprising cultural similarities. This helped reduce prejudice and build empathy and trust across diverse backgrounds. Empowering youth through personal expression and critical thinking Participants were encouraged to express their personal and cultural stories, reflect on their identities, and explore shared European values through creative formats such as storytelling circles, simulation games, and debates. These activities nurtured critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and the confidence to engage in democratic life. Fostering environmental awareness and responsibility Dedicated sessions were held on zero waste, climate change, and sustainable living. Young people discussed local and global environmental challenges, exchanged ideas, and learned practical ways to reduce their ecological footprint—strengthening their role as active, environmentally conscious citizens. Boosting digital and soft skills We introduced participants to user-friendly digital tools for storytelling and collaboration, while also embedding soft skills training in all activities—teamwork, time management, communication, and adaptability. Peer-to-peer interaction and multilingual communication (mainly in English) helped young people grow personally and professionally. Encouraging active citizenship and EU engagement The project included reflection on the role of the EU, the importance of democratic values, and the significance of youth participation in civic life, particularly relevant ahead of the European elections. We aimed to instill a sense of agency and European identity in participants. Through the implementation of this youth exchange, we ultimately sought to build a foundation for long-lasting change.
