Inclusion of marginalised young people

Objectives

Coffee with Garlic was a youthworker seminar designed to bring together youthworkers from eight different countries to consider how to widen opportunities to participation for young people experiencing barriers in their lives. It focussed on identifying barriers to participation in Erasmus+ and ESC for youth with fewer opportunities, specifically fear of the unknown and cultural differences between participating nations, however we were not so interested with the superficial differences, such as food, traditions, cultural dress etc. Rather we wished to peel the skin of the garlic and go deeper into what lies below the overt differences obvious on arrival into a country, unpacking how we can support young people in experiencing a real cultural immersion. Our target group for this seminar is organisations who work with young people with fewer opportunities, for whom experiencing exposure to different cultures may be something that creates apprehension rather than excitement. In short our objectives were: 1) To identify the elements of culture shock which most effect young people with fewer opportunities we wish to mobilise 2) To consider tools we could adopt or create to turn culture shock into positive cultural exposure 3) To create activities which could be used by organisations in the future to support inclusion of youth with fewer opportunities in international cultural immersion 4) Introduce partners who work with young people with additional obstacles to each other in order to develop a trusting platform for collaboration on projects with this target group We have identified a need within our organisations, that there are inadequate international opportunities available for young people from especially those from excluded backgrounds or with fewer opportunities. The project brought together 5 organisations from European mainland and 3 organisations from territories and regions of France and the Netherlands, supporting young people, particularly those experiencing obstacles, such as excluded from or having not completed school, detained youth, young people and young people from low economy groups. All of these organisations have discussed with TCTP future opportunities of working together. We have identified additional needs which this project will address: 1) A need to find/create opportunities for international Non-Formal Learning for young people (especially those with fewer opportunities) 2) A need to offer programmes creating opportunities to raise cultural awareness including participants from overseas regions and territories 3) A need to develop methodologies to decrease apprehension in hard to reach young people 4) A need to raise youth worker competence to be able to equip young people with fewer opportunities with skills needed to take part in a first international experience 5) A need to raise confidence in youth workers to support with the identified target group 6) A need for youth workers to observe good practice in their field outside of their locality. Coffee with Garlic offered organisations who work with young people on Aruba, across the OCT/OCRs and wider Europe a supportive platform to begin to meet these identified needs. We wanted to consider which methodologies are transferable across EU and peripheral regions with organisations delivering non-formal activities and inspire youth workers to try activities in their organisation which may previously not have been considered and also begin to build a platform for future co-operation for youth activity. The main priority and target group of all participants is inclusion and each named organisation is working with young people experiencing obstacles.
