The project had two interconnected objectives, focused around engaging fewer opportunity youth in accordance with the Inclusion and Diversity strategy of the Programme. First, we aimed to train and prepare new youth leaders from within a group of young people (with experiences of foster care) who had previously taken part in our programmes and at least one Erasmus+ youth mobility. The goal was to help them develop the skills and confidence needed to take an active role in shaping and leading future Erasmus+ projects — moving from being participants to becoming co-creators. Secondly, we wanted to implement youth mobilities where these newly trained leaders could take on the roles of youth leaders, supporting Atalaya staff in supporting the participants, preparing and facilitating activities. This gave them the chance to put their leadership competences into practice and to influence the content and direction of the projects they helped design. Through this approach, we aimed to strengthen the participants’ sense of ownership, initiative and responsibility among our young people. By building a general leadership mindset and giving them a chance to enact it, we hoped they would build an attitude they could transfer into other areas of their professional and personal lives. The project also contributed to building a more sustainable structure within Atalaya, where youth leaders are gradually prepared to co-manage future international activities and mentor new participants from a similar background. By involving our participants more we ensured that Erasmus+ projects reflect their current needs, experiences and ideas.
