Objectives

The “NextGEN” exchange aimed to empower young people to become active, informed, and engaged citizens within their communities and beyond. Through this project, we sought to raise awareness about the importance of civic participation and provide participants with practical skills and knowledge to take an active role in public life. The main goal was to increase young people's understanding of how they can contribute to democratic processes, both at local and European levels, and to inspire them to take part in elections, decision-making bodies, and community initiatives. Specific objectives included: Civic Education: To enhance participants’ understanding of civic engagement, democratic values, and the mechanisms that allow citizens to influence public decisions. Election Participation: To build young people's competencies and confidence to participate in elections and understand the significance of their vote in shaping local and European policies. Peer Leadership: To equip participants with participatory tools and methods they can share with their peers, fostering a wider culture of active citizenship. Exchange of Experiences: To create a space for young people from different countries to share experiences, compare opportunities for civic involvement, and exchange best practices in political participation. Community Engagement: To motivate participants to become more involved in local community initiatives, public consultations, and participatory budgeting, strengthening the link between youth and their local authorities. We drew inspiration to include elements of digital literacy and innovation in civic participation. Recognizing the increasing role of technology in public life, the “NextGEN” exchange encouraged participants to explore how digital tools, online platforms, and artificial intelligence can enhance civic engagement, communication, and access to democratic processes. This helped young people understand how technology can be used responsibly to promote participation, transparency, and inclusion. We also recognized that civic engagement today requires flexibility, cultural understanding, and a readiness to respond to social and political change. By developing these skills, participants learned to navigate the evolving civic landscape with confidence, curiosity, and resilience. We integrated principles of social inclusion and empathy. We emphasized that active citizenship also means standing up for equality and human rights. Activities were designed to raise awareness about discrimination, strengthen emotional intelligence, and promote solidarity among participants from diverse backgrounds — ensuring that civic participation is inclusive and accessible to all. The youth xchange inspired a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility within civic participation. Young people explored how community engagement can extend to ecological action — from promoting sustainable lifestyles to participating in local environmental initiatives. This broadened their understanding of civic responsibility to include environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
