Objectives

The main goal of our project was to educate young people on how to act safely and responsibly during and after natural disasters, as well as in situations caused by human error. The idea for the project was born during a youth group's trip through regions in Poland (Chojnice and Rytel), where we witnessed the long-term effects of a devastating hurricane. Our interest deepened after learning about other natural disasters, such as the Central European Flood of 1997 and the recent earthquake in Marrakesh. These events made us reflect on how unprepared we would be in similar circumstances and how little knowledge we had about emergency response or even basic first aid. We quickly realized that this was not only our problem—young people in general, especially those traveling or living abroad, may find themselves at risk if they don’t know local procedures, especially when facing language barriers. The project aimed to fill this educational gap by bringing together young people from countries affected by natural disasters—Poland, Hungary, and Morocco. Participants from Hungary had firsthand experience with floods, forest fires, and earthquakes, while Moroccan youth had recently dealt with a severe earthquake. All participants showed a strong interest in the topic and acknowledged the need to increase their knowledge in this area. This collective realization became the foundation for developing a youth exchange project that would address these needs on an international scale. Project goals were: - educating young people about safety procedures that should be followed during and after natural disasters and threats resulting from human mistakes (e.g. fires, electricity accidents etc.), as well as coping with their effects; - preparing a place for creative work in an international environment; - drawing the attention of the inhabitants of Starogard Gdański to the threats of both natural disasters and human mistakes, as well as the need for education in this area and the importance of active participation in civic life; - expanding the network of contacts and strengthening cooperation between partner organizations of the project, exchange of "good practices"
